Bern is encircled by the Aare, whose clear alpine water defines local summer life. Water temperature follows a strong seasonal cycle. In winter, the Aare near Bern is typically around 3–5 °C (37–41 °F). Spring warming is gradual, with temperatures commonly reaching 8–12 °C (46–54 °F) as snowmelt subsides. In summer, especially July and August, the river often warms to about 16–20 °C (61–68 °F), occasionally a bit higher during heatwaves. Autumn brings a steady cooling back below 12 °C (54 °F).
Swimming in the Aare is allowed and famously popular in Bern. The river’s water quality is excellent, and designated entry and exit points support the traditional downstream swim. However, the current is strong and water levels can change with rainfall and upstream releases, so swimming is recommended only for confident swimmers who follow local guidance. Outside summer, cold temperatures and flow conditions limit swimming to experienced cold-water enthusiasts.
