Andermatt lies high in the central Swiss Alps, where the young Reuss begins its course. Because the river here is fed by snowmelt and alpine springs, water temperatures remain cold year-round. In winter, the Reuss in Andermatt is close to freezing, typically around 0–2 °C (32–36 °F). In spring, increased meltwater keeps temperatures low, usually about 3–6 °C (37–43 °F). During summer, even on warm days, the river rarely exceeds 8–12 °C (46–54 °F). In autumn, temperatures quickly fall back below 6 °C (43 °F).
Swimming in the Reuss around Andermatt is not prohibited, but it is generally not recommended for leisure bathing.
