** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Skien, in Telemark County, sits by several inland waters, most notably the broad Norsjø lake that is part of the Telemark Canal system. Surface water temperatures in these lakes vary by season: in spring (May–June) you can expect roughly 6–15 °C (43–59 °F) as lakes warm after ice melt, while peak summer (July–August) temperatures commonly range from about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in open water and can be higher in shallow, sheltered bays. In early autumn (September–October) temperatures generally fall to around 8–14 °C (46–57 °F). During winter months (December–March) surface temperatures approach freezing, roughly 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), and lakes often freeze over.
Swimming is generally allowed and popular at designated beaches and informal bathing spots along the lake shores and canal, since these waters are used for recreation and tourism. Local rules may restrict swimming near busy boat channels, industrial areas or where water quality warnings are posted. Lifeguards are not common outside main municipal beaches, so swimmers should heed posted signs and seasonal advisories about algae blooms or pollution. Cold-water shock is a risk in shoulder seasons and winter; many people use wetsuits or stick to supervised beach areas during the warmer months for safer conditions.
