Ludza (Latvian: Ludza), in the Latgale region of eastern Latvia, is surrounded by small lakes and slow rivers whose temperatures follow the typical inland Baltic patterns. In spring (April–May) surface temperatures in lakes usually climb from about 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as ice melts and warms; rivers tend to remain toward the lower end of that range. In summer (June–August) lake surface temperatures commonly reach 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), occasionally rising to around 25–26 °C (77–79 °F) in shallow, sheltered basins during heatwaves, while rivers are somewhat cooler, often 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) depending on flow and shading. Autumn cooling brings lakes down to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in September–October. In winter many water bodies freeze and temperatures near the ice approach 0–4 °C (32–39 °F).
Swimming in Ludza’s lakes and calm river spots is commonly practiced in summer when temperatures are comfortable for bathing, and official bathing areas may be open locally. Swimming is not recommended outside the warm months due to cold water, ice and reduced buoyancy, and water quality can fluctuate after heavy rains; river spots can also have currents or submerged hazards.
