** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Balvi, a small town in northeastern Latvia, is situated by Lake Balvi (Balvu ezers), a typical lowland Latvian lake whose surface temperatures vary markedly through the year. During winter the lake commonly freezes and water beneath the ice is near 0 °C (32 °F); during spring thaw surface temperatures climb from about 1–8 °C (34–46 °F). In early summer the lake typically reaches 10–18 °C (50–64 °F), while midsummer maximums are usually in the 18–24 °C range (64–75 °F), and in warm spells surface readings can occasionally approach 25–26 °C (77–79 °F). Autumn sees a steady decline back toward 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) before ice formation resumes.
Swimming in Lake Balvi is permitted and popular in the warmer months where designated beaches and recreational spots are maintained. Local authorities monitor water quality and mark or close bathing areas when blooms of cyanobacteria or other contamination occur, so swimmers should heed posted notices. Lifeguards may be present at main beaches during peak season, but many spots are unsupervised, so standard precautions are advised. Experienced winter swimmers sometimes use the lake for ice swimming in specially prepared areas, but that carries significant risk and should only be done with appropriate safety measures and local guidance.
