Tartu sits on the Emajõgi river and lies close to the large Lake Peipus (Peipsi järv), so water temperatures vary with season and location. In spring the surface of the river and nearby lakes typically warms slowly, roughly 1–10 °C (34–50 °F). Summer averages for Lake Peipus and sheltered bathing spots around Tartu are commonly in the 18–24 °C range (64–75 °F), occasionally reaching the mid‑20s °C (around 76–79 °F) in very warm years. Autumn brings cooling to about 8–15 °C (46–59 °F). In winter the water is at or below freezing at the surface where ice forms, around 0 °C (32 °F) or lower, with widespread ice cover until thaw.
Swimming in and around Tartu is generally possible during the warmer months in designated beaches and calmer river bays, provided local water‑quality checks are satisfactory and no cyanobacterial (blue‑green algae) warnings are in effect. Authorities and volunteer groups monitor bathing sites, and some locations have lifeguard service in high season. Swimming in fast stretches of the Emajõgi or when water quality is poor is discouraged for safety and health reasons.
