In Varaždin, the Drava River flows wide and steady, giving the city a strong connection to nature. The river’s water here is influenced by upstream reservoirs and can be noticeably cooler, even in the height of summer. While the air can be very warm, the Drava usually stays refreshing, with temperatures that rarely reach the comfort of smaller lakes or shallower rivers. This makes it pleasant for quick dips but not always for long swimming sessions.
Swimming in the Drava within Varaždin itself is not very common, since the current can be strong and there are no official bathing areas in the central part of the city. However, the riverbanks are popular for walks, cycling, and fishing, and in some calmer spots locals may enter the water to cool off. Most organized swimming and beach activities are found slightly outside the city, where the Drava forms calmer branches and gravel shores.
