*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Peterborough, located in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, is surrounded by a network of lakes and rivers that form part of the Trent–Severn Waterway, including Little Lake, the Otonabee River, and nearby Chemong and Clear Lakes. The water temperature in these inland bodies changes significantly with the seasons. During winter, surface temperatures often drop to near freezing, around 0–2 °C (32–36 °F), with ice covering many lakes. In spring, melting snow and cool air keep the water chilly, typically 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). By mid-summer, the shallower lakes around Peterborough warm up to 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), while deeper parts of the river and larger lakes stay slightly cooler. In autumn, the water gradually cools again to around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) as the weather transitions.
Swimming in Peterborough is common during the summer, particularly at designated areas such as Beavermead Park Beach on Little Lake. The season generally runs from late June to early September, when temperatures are most comfortable and safety patrols are present. Outside this period, cold water and strong currents in the Otonabee River make swimming less advisable. However, the city’s clean water, scenic parks, and accessible lakes provide excellent conditions for summer recreation, paddling, and other outdoor water activities.
