** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Niagara Falls, located on the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA, is fed by the Niagara River, which carries water from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The river’s water temperature reflects that of Lake Erie, with significant seasonal variation but relatively stable flow throughout the year. In winter, temperatures near the falls average around 1–3 °C (34–37 °F), and ice often forms along the riverbanks. During spring, as Lake Erie warms, the river’s temperature rises slowly to around 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). In summer, the upper river near Lake Erie can reach 20–24 °C (68–75 °F), though the water cools slightly as it moves downstream toward the falls. By autumn, the temperature drops again to 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) as the air cools and seasonal mixing begins.
Despite its impressive clarity and natural beauty, swimming in the Niagara River is strictly prohibited and highly dangerous. The strong currents, sudden drops, and extreme turbulence near the falls make it unsafe for any recreational swimming. Even areas farther upstream or downstream can have unpredictable undertows. Instead, visitors enjoy the river’s beauty from observation decks, parks, and boat tours. While the water’s temperature does become warm enough for swimming in summer, its power and flow conditions make it a site for viewing rather than entering.
