Water Temperature Trends
Bangladesh’s coastline along the Bay of Bengal is characterized by warm sea surface temperatures year-round. Seasonal averages typically run from about 22–26 °C (72–79 °F) in the coolest months of December to February, rising to roughly 26–30 °C (79–86 °F) in the pre-monsoon spring and early summer (March–May). During the monsoon season (June–September) and into the post-monsoon autumn (October–November) the sea usually stays warm, often between 28–31 °C (82–88 °F), with peak localized values occasionally reaching around 32–33 °C (90–91 °F) in sheltered nearshore waters. Variations occur by location and year, with slightly cooler water farther offshore and warmer coastal shallows.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is a common activity at popular beaches such as Cox’s Bazar and Kuakata, and the generally warm water makes bathing comfortable for most of the year. However, safety considerations influence when and where swimming is advisable. The monsoon months bring strong currents, heavy rain, rough seas and a higher risk of storms or cyclones, so authorities typically warn against open-water swimming during those periods; visibility and water quality can also be affected near river mouths and urban outflows. Lifeguard and safety infrastructure remain limited in many areas, so swimmers are advised to heed local warnings, choose patrolled sections where available, avoid swimming alone, and stay out of the water during bad weather. For recreation and tourism, the most favorable window for swimming is generally from October through May when conditions are calmer and sea temperatures remain pleasantly warm.
