Water Temperature Trends
Western Australia's coastline is known for its warm, tropical waters, particularly along the northern regions, and cooler waters to the south. In the northern part, including areas like Broome and the Ningaloo Reef, the sea temperatures during summer (December to February) range from 79°F to 86°F (26°C to 30°C). These warm waters make it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The tropical climate of the north ensures that the waters remain inviting and perfect for water-based activities year-round.
As you move south toward Perth and beyond, the sea temperatures cool slightly. In the summer months, the coastal waters range from 73°F to 79°F (23°C to 26°C), making for more moderate conditions. While still pleasant for swimming, the cooler temperatures can be a bit more refreshing compared to the northern beaches, especially during the hot summer days.
In winter (June to August), Western Australia's southern coast sees a further dip in sea temperatures. Around Perth and Albany, the waters range from 59°F to 64°F (15°C to 18°C). This drop in temperature makes it less comfortable for casual swimming, but surfers and experienced swimmers still take advantage of the region's consistent waves and stunning coastline. The colder waters in the south, combined with the rugged beauty of the coastline, offer a different experience for those willing to brave the chill.
