** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Västerdalälven, the river running through Dalarna County, shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature because of its northern location and varying flow. During winter the river is close to freezing, typically around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) where ice forms on slower stretches. In spring, temperatures remain cold to cool as snowmelt and runoff dominate, commonly 2–12 °C (36–54 °F). Summer brings the warmest surface readings, often in the range 12–22 °C (54–72 °F) in sheltered or shallow areas, though faster, deeper channels stay cooler. By autumn the water cools again to roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as air temperatures fall and daylight shortens.
Swimming in Västerdalälven is generally permitted because most Swedish surface waters are open to the public, but whether it is advisable depends on location, season and conditions. In summer many locals and visitors swim where currents are mild and banks are accessible, yet strong currents, varying depths, cold pockets, boat traffic and debris present hazards. Spring floods and areas downstream of hydropower intakes or sluices are particularly dangerous and should be avoided. There is limited lifeguard coverage along the river, so using personal flotation devices, entering with companions, and observing local signage and weather conditions are important precautions.
