The Orontes River, locally known as Asi Nehri, flows through Hatay toward the Mediterranean and shows noticeable seasonal shifts in water temperature. In winter months (December–February) surface temperatures typically range from about 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), while spring (March–May) sees a rise to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). Summer (June–August) brings the warmest conditions, with many stretches warming to approximately 20–26 °C (68–79 °F), though cooler pockets fed by springs or deeper channels can remain several degrees lower. Autumn (September–November) usually moderates to about 16–22 °C (61–72 °F). Temperatures vary with depth, flow rate and recent weather, so measured values at a given spot can differ from regional averages.
Swimming in the Asi is practiced in some calmer, shallower areas and particularly near the estuary where water is warmer and access is easier, but it is not uniformly regulated or officially designated throughout the river. Authorities may close or discourage swimming at times because of strong currents, submerged hazards and variable water quality influenced by urban and agricultural runoff. When local conditions and water quality are acceptable, summer temperatures around 20–26 °C (68–79 °F) make swimming reasonably comfortable, yet swimmers should heed local guidance, avoid fast-flowing sections and be mindful that safety and cleanliness vary by location and season.
