The Kiehimänjoki River, a significant watercourse in the Kainuu region, provides a typical northern river environment for swimming. Swimming is permitted along the river's banks and calmer areas due to Everyman’s Rights, which legally grants public access to waterways for recreation, provided the current is not dangerously strong and private property is respected. As a river, the water temperature can fluctuate more rapidly than a large lake, influenced heavily by recent weather and the flow from upstream lakes.
The river's water temperature is strongly seasonal. During the winter, from roughly November to April, the river is generally ice-covered, with the water beneath the ice at a frigid 0∘C to 4∘C. The short, comfortable swimming season peaks in July and early August. During this time, the surface temperature typically warms up to range between 17∘C and 22∘C in slow-moving sections. Outside of this peak, the water quickly cools, especially as autumn progresses. Due to potential strong currents and varying depths, caution is always advised when swimming in the Kiehimänjoki.
