** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Quarry Lake in Canmore, Alberta, is a popular, man-made reservoir created from a former open-pit coal mine, fed by cold mountain and groundwater springs. Due to its glacial source and high-altitude location in the Rockies, the water remains notably cold throughout the year. In the peak summer months, surface temperatures can warm slightly, but they are generally frigid, likely peaking only around 16∘C to 18∘C (61∘F to 64∘F), and sometimes higher in the shallow areas. In the winter, the water temperature drops close to freezing, around 0∘C to 4∘C (32∘F to 39∘F).
Swimming is permitted and popular at Quarry Lake, especially during hot summer days, as it is one of the favored outdoor recreation spots in the Canmore area. However, swimmers must brace themselves for the glacier-fed cold, which often prompts individuals to wear wetsuits or limit their dips. The lake has a shallow, sandy beach area, but the water deepens quickly, reaching over 30 meters (100 feet) in some areas. Importantly, the lake is an unsupervised swimming spot, meaning all swimming is strictly at one's own risk, and the Town of Canmore has implemented safety measures like life-saving equipment due to past drowning incidents.
