Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. Location & Local Information
Gander Lake, located in central Newfoundland near the town of Gander, is one of the province’s largest and deepest freshwater lakes. Its depth and northern position contribute to relatively cool water temperatures throughout the year. In early spring, following the ice melt in May, surface temperatures remain cold, averaging around 37–43°F (3–6°C). By late May and June, the lake warms modestly to about 50–57°F (10–14°C). During midsummer, from July through August, the surface temperature in shallower sections can reach 63–68°F (17–20°C), while deeper areas stay considerably cooler. By late September, as the weather turns colder, the water temperature drops again to around 52°F (11°C) or lower.
Swimming in Gander Lake is allowed and can be enjoyable during the warmest part of the summer. The lake’s clean, clear water and scenic surroundings make it a popular spot for locals and visitors seeking outdoor recreation. However, because of its size and depth, the water tends to remain cool even in midsummer, and swimmers often find it brisk beyond the shoreline. The best time for swimming is from late June through early September, when air temperatures are highest and the surface water reaches its most comfortable level for short swims and beach activities.
