Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Beg is a small, shallow lough fed by the River Bann, lying immediately north of the much larger Lough Neagh in County Londonderry. The water temperature in the River Bann flowing through this area reflects the temperate Northern Irish climate, remaining consistently chilly. In the winter months, temperatures hover between 3 and 7∘C (37 to 45∘F), and even during a warm summer, the river’s surface temperature is unlikely to rise much above 14 to 18∘C (57 to 64∘F).
Swimming is strongly discouraged and not officially permitted in this section of the River Bann and Lough Beg for several reasons. Most notably, the area, along with Lough Neagh, has recently experienced issues with blue-green algae blooms, which produce toxins harmful to human health and lethal to animals. The lough and its islands, such as Church Island, are also part of a protected nature reserve, designated as a Special Protection Area for its sensitive bird and wetland habitat. For visitors, the nearby Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy celebrates the life and work of the Nobel laureate poet, offering a major cultural attraction away from the water.
