Leicester lies along the River Soar, which flows through the city before joining the River Trent further north. The river’s temperature reflects the mild but changeable climate of the English Midlands, remaining cool for most of the year. In winter, the water typically averages around 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), rising slowly to about 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in spring. During summer, the surface temperature can reach 16–18 °C (61–64 °F) on warm days, particularly in calm, shallow stretches. By autumn, it cools again to around 10–12 °C (50–54 °F), following the seasonal rhythm of local rivers. The water remains fresh and relatively clean in rural stretches but may be cooler and more variable within the city.
Swimming in the River Soar is possible, though it is not officially promoted within central Leicester due to boat traffic, limited access, and occasional changes in water quality. However, wild swimmers often use quieter sections upstream or downstream where the current is gentle and the water is clearer. Wetsuits are recommended outside midsummer.
