** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Gällivare, in Norrbotten County, lies well north and its inland lakes and rivers remain relatively cold for most of the year. During winter and spring thaw the water is at or close to freezing, around 0–5 °C (32–41 °F). In early summer surface temperatures typically climb to roughly 8–15 °C (46–59 °F), and in warm, shallow small lakes or sheltered bays on the warmest midsummer days they can reach 15–20 °C (59–68 °F). Larger lakes and flowing rivers are usually a few degrees cooler than small, shallow bodies and remain cooler at depth even in summer. By late summer and autumn temperatures fall again to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) and then down toward single digits as ice forms, with permanent ice cover commonly from late autumn into spring.
Swimming in lakes and calm river spots is common in the short summer season and generally allowed under Sweden’s access rights, but conditions dictate whether it is sensible: cold temperatures, sudden depth changes, strong currents in rivers and low visibility increase risk, so suitable sites and local experience are advisable. Winter ice swimming is practiced by some with prepared holes and safety measures. Water quality in many inland waters is good, but swimmers should always judge temperature, flow and access before entering and follow local signs and precautions.
