*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Potenza sits inland in the Basilicata highlands, so its lakes, reservoirs and rivers tend to be cooler than coastal waters and strongly influenced by altitude and spring-fed flow. Seasonal surface temperatures in local rivers commonly range from about 1–6 °C (34–43 °F) in winter, warming to roughly 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) in spring and often reaching 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) during warm summer months in slower stretches. Small, shallow reservoirs and mountain lakes can warm more in sheltered basins, briefly hitting around 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) on hot summer days, while autumn cools waters back toward 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) as rains and lower air temperatures return.
Swimming in Potenza’s inland waters is possible but conditional. Designated lakes and some reservoir areas permit bathing when safety and water-quality rules are met, yet other reservoirs are managed for drinking water, irrigation or hydroelectric use and may prohibit access. Rivers offer natural swimming spots in calmer pools, but currents, fluctuating flows, submerged hazards and seasonal quality issues mean swimming is often informal rather than officially supervised. Visitors should check local signage and municipal regulations, respect closures, and be mindful of colder temperatures that can increase risk of hypothermia outside high summer.
