Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast

⚠️ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 54°F (12°C) to 60°F (15°C). The water is significantly warmer, and swimming becomes possible for most people. However, caution may still be required for prolonged stays in the water, as extended exposure can cause discomfort. This is a suitable temperature range for short swims and for those accustomed to cooler water. For more comfortable swimming, it is recommended to use proper gear. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city, is built along the River Lee, which divides into several channels before flowing into Cork Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean. The river’s temperature reflects both inland freshwater inflows and tidal influence near the estuary. In winter, the water typically ranges between 5–7°C (41–45°F), while in summer it rises to around 15–18°C (59–64°F). On warm, sunny days in July or August, surface temperatures in sheltered areas can briefly reach 19°C (66°F). Because of the Lee’s mix of river and tidal waters, temperatures fluctuate gently throughout the year, staying cool but relatively stable. The most comfortable time for swimming is between June and early September, when both air and water are mildest.

Swimming in the River Lee within Cork City itself is generally not recommended due to tidal currents, boat traffic, and urban infrastructure. However, swimming is popular in nearby sections outside the city, particularly at the Inniscarra Reservoir, Lough Mahón, and several safe coastal spots near Cork Harbour. Local open-water swimmers often use these areas during summer, with wetsuits extending the season. Beyond swimming, Cork offers cultural and outdoor attractions, including Fitzgerald’s Park, the English Market, and nearby Blarney Castle, while the surrounding coastline provides scenic beaches and excellent opportunities for kayaking and sailing.
