** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kohtla-Järve sits inland in northeastern Estonia and its lakes, rivers and former quarry ponds follow a clear seasonal cycle. In spring (March–May) surface temperatures typically rise from near freezing to about 0–10 °C (32–50 °F) as ice melts. In summer (June–August) shallow lakes and slow river reaches commonly warm to roughly 16–22 °C (61–72 °F), with occasional warm spells pushing small, shallow bodies toward 24–25 °C (75–77 °F). Autumn (September–November) brings cooling to roughly 5–15 °C (41–59 °F) before winter ice forms; under ice or in open winter flow the water is close to 0–4 °C (32–39 °F). Flowing rivers can be a few degrees different from nearby lakes because of currents and depth.
Swimming in the Kohtla-Järve area is possible in summer but is more limited than at coastal beaches; there are few widely supervised municipal bathing sites, and many local spots are informal. Water quality and suitability for bathing vary because of historical oil-shale industry activity, mining lakes and runoff, so some ponds or stretches of river may be discolored or carry elevated mineral or pollutant levels. Authorities post local advisories where relevant, and people who swim should choose clearly designated recreational sites, heed warnings, and remember that spring and autumn temperatures can cause cold-water shock while winter swimming is only safe in organized, monitored conditions.
