*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Lieksanjoki River is a significant river system in North Karelia, flowing through areas such as the town of Lieksa. Swimming in the river is generally allowed along accessible banks and at designated public swimming spots, a practice protected by Finland’s Everyman’s Rights. This right ensures public recreational access to natural waters, though caution is always advised, especially near rapids and dams, as river currents can be powerful and unpredictable compared to lakes. The river’s water quality is typically good, supporting safe seasonal swimming.
The water temperature in the Lieksanjoki River is strongly influenced by the Northern climate and river flow. During the long winter, from roughly November to April, the river is often partially or fully ice-covered, with the water temperature consistently cold, settling between 0∘C and 4∘C. The short, mild summer brings the only period of comfortable swimming, peaking in July. At this time, the surface temperature can rise to a maximum range of approximately 16∘C to 20∘C in slower-moving sections. Outside of this summer window, the water is too cold for casual bathing, appealing only to those engaged in cold-water swimming.
