*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Kemi River (Kemijoki), the longest river in Finland, flows through Lapland and is heavily regulated by hydroelectric power plants. Swimming is generally permissible in accessible, calm areas and designated beaches, upheld by Everyman’s Rights. However, due to the regulation and significant flow, swimmers must exercise extreme caution regarding strong currents, particularly near dams and rapids, where bathing may be prohibited. Public beaches ensure safe access and monitored water quality for recreational use during the summer.
The river's water temperature reflects its northern location and heavy regulation. During the long winter, from roughly November to May, the river is largely frozen or maintains a near-freezing temperature of 0∘C to 4∘C. Comfortable swimming is confined to a brief period in the summer peak, usually July. At this time, the surface temperature can rise to a range of 15∘C to 21∘C in slow-moving sections and shallows. Outside of July, the water is cool, mainly appealing to winter swimmers who utilize ice holes maintained near saunas, where the temperature remains just above freezing.
