** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Bow River, flowing from the glaciers of Banff National Park through Calgary and into southern Alberta, is one of the province’s most iconic waterways. Because it originates in the Rocky Mountains, its water temperature stays cool even during the summer months. In early spring, after the ice and snow begin to melt, the river’s surface temperature averages around 37–41°F (3–5°C). By late May and June, it warms modestly to about 46–54°F (8–12°C). During midsummer, particularly in July and August, surface temperatures in slower-moving or shallow stretches near Calgary can reach 59–64°F (15–18°C), while the upper sections near Banff remain much colder. By September, as autumn cools the air, the river drops below 55°F (13°C) once again.
Swimming in the Bow River is allowed but generally not recommended due to the cold water, strong current, and changing flow conditions. Even on warm summer days, the river’s temperature can cause discomfort or hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Most people enjoy the Bow through activities such as rafting, kayaking, or fishing, which allow them to experience the river safely. In calmer sections, short dips or wading may be possible, but caution is essential. The Bow River’s beauty and clarity make it ideal for scenic recreation rather than extended swimming.
