** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Ausable River, located in southwestern Ontario, flows through the Huron County region before emptying into Lake Huron near Grand Bend. Its water temperature changes significantly throughout the year due to Ontario’s temperate climate and the influence of surrounding farmland and forests. In early spring, when snowmelt feeds the river, the water remains cold, averaging around 39–45°F (4–7°C). By late May and June, temperatures rise to about 52–61°F (11–16°C). During midsummer, from July through August, the Ausable River reaches its warmest period, with surface temperatures in slower-moving sections often between 66–73°F (19–23°C). As autumn approaches, the water gradually cools again, falling below 57°F (14°C) by late September.
Swimming in the Ausable River is allowed but generally limited to calm, accessible areas, as much of the river passes through natural channels and conservation zones. The water can be clear and mild in midsummer, making short swims or wading possible on warm days, especially near recreation areas such as the Pinery Provincial Park. However, deeper or faster-moving stretches are better suited for canoeing and kayaking rather than swimming. The best time to enjoy the river for water activities is from late June to early September, when both air and water temperatures are comfortably warm.
