Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 50°F (10°C) to 54°F (12°C). The water is slightly warmer, but still cool for most people. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Athabasca River, one of Alberta’s major waterways, originates from the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park and flows northeast through forests and plains toward Lake Athabasca. Because it begins in glacial regions, its water temperature remains cold for most of the year. In early spring, as snow and ice melt, the river’s surface temperature averages around 37–41°F (3–5°C). During late spring and early summer, it rises slightly to about 46–54°F (8–12°C). The warmest period occurs in midsummer, from July through August, when the upper reaches may reach 59–64°F (15–18°C) in shallower or slower-moving sections, though areas near glacial inflows remain much colder. By autumn, temperatures quickly drop again, returning to around 46°F (8°C) or lower by October.
Swimming in the Athabasca River is technically possible but not recommended due to its cold temperature, swift current, and varying depth. Even in summer, the water remains brisk and can cause hypothermia after only a short period. Most people enjoy the river through safer activities such as rafting, kayaking, or scenic viewing along its banks. In calmer stretches, brief wading or short dips may be possible on warm days, but caution is essential. The Athabasca River is best appreciated for its natural beauty and power rather than as a swimming destination.
