Location & Local Information
In Šahy, the river Ipeľ forms part of the natural border with Hungary and flows calmly through the lowland landscape. Its water is warmer compared to mountain rivers, since the region has a mild climate and the river has a relatively gentle current. In spring, the temperature usually ranges from 12–15 °C, while in summer it often reaches 20–23 °C. During hot July and August days, the Ipeľ near Šahy can warm up to around 24–25 °C, which makes bathing here quite pleasant.
Although the Ipeľ is not an official swimming area, locals sometimes use quieter stretches of the river for cooling down and short swims. The gentle flow and accessible banks make it suitable for wading or relaxing in the water, but as with any natural river, caution is needed regarding currents and depth. The overall atmosphere is more about spontaneous summer refreshment than organized recreational swimming.
