Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Ennis, the county town of Clare in western Ireland, sits along the River Fergus, a winding freshwater river that flows north to join the Shannon Estuary. The river’s temperature follows the mild Atlantic climate of the region. In winter, the water generally ranges from 4–7°C (39–45°F), while in summer it warms to around 15–18°C (59–64°F). On calm, sunny days in July or August, shallow sections may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), though cooler currents from upstream keep most of the flow refreshingly brisk. The water remains clean and clear in many areas, making the Fergus suitable for recreation during the warmer months when air temperatures are also comfortable.
Swimming in the River Fergus is allowed but should be approached with care, as the current can vary and access points are limited near Ennis town. Locals occasionally swim in calmer stretches during summer, though the river is better known for fishing and kayaking. Wetsuits are advisable outside midsummer, as the water cools quickly below the surface. Beyond swimming, Ennis offers a rich mix of attractions, including its medieval town centre, music-filled pubs, and proximity to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Together, the river and its surroundings combine natural charm with cultural vibrancy typical of County Clare.
