Kuopio, located in the North Savo region of eastern Finland, lies on the shores of Lake Kallavesi, one of the country’s largest and most characteristic lake systems. The city’s many bays, islands, and connected waterways define its landscape and influence the local water temperatures. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature of lakes and rivers around Kuopio is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest period, it usually reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). In shallow and sunny areas, temperatures can briefly reach 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lakes freeze again in November.
Swimming in Kuopio’s lakes is allowed and highly popular during the summer months. The water is clean and safe for bathing, and the city offers many public beaches and piers.
