Kajaani, the regional capital of Kainuu in eastern Finland, is surrounded by lakes and rivers, including the Kajaaninjoki River and the nearby Lake Oulujärvi. The area’s inland water temperatures vary strongly through the seasons due to its northern location. In spring, after the ice melts, the surface water in lakes and rivers remains cold, around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). By early summer, temperatures rise to 14–17 °C (57–63 °F), and in July the water typically reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). During heatwaves, sheltered and shallow places can briefly warm to 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). In autumn, the temperature drops below 10 °C (50 °F), and most lakes freeze by November.
Swimming in Kajaani’s lakes and rivers is allowed and common during the short northern summer. The water is clean, and several maintained beaches, such as those on Lake Oulujärvi and along the Kajaaninjoki, provide easy access.
