*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Red Deer, located in central Alberta between Calgary and Edmonton, is surrounded by several freshwater bodies, including the Red Deer River and nearby lakes such as Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake. Because of the region’s continental climate, water temperatures change significantly throughout the year. In early spring, most rivers and lakes remain cold, averaging around 39–45°F (4–7°C) as ice melts. By late May and June, surface temperatures rise to about 54–63°F (12–17°C), becoming more comfortable for short swims or boating. During midsummer, from July through August, the warmest lakes near Red Deer can reach 68–73°F (20–23°C), while the Red Deer River usually stays cooler at around 61–68°F (16–20°C). By late September, the water cools again below 57°F (14°C) as fall arrives.
Swimming in the Red Deer area is allowed and quite popular during the summer months, especially in nearby lakes that warm up faster than the river. Sylvan Lake, for example, offers sandy beaches and mild water temperatures suitable for families and recreational swimmers. The Red Deer River, while clean and scenic, has a stronger current and remains cooler, making it better for paddling or short wades than for extended swimming. The best time for swimming is from late June to early September, when both air and water temperatures are most favorable.
