*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Fort Saint John, located in northeastern British Columbia, lies along the banks of the Peace River, one of the province’s largest and most significant waterways. The river’s temperature changes noticeably with the northern continental climate and the influence of snowmelt from the Rocky Mountains. In early spring, when the ice breaks up in April, the water is very cold, averaging around 37–41°F (3–5°C). By late May and June, temperatures rise gradually to about 50–57°F (10–14°C), though the river remains cool due to its strong flow. The warmest period occurs in July and August, when surface temperatures can reach 63–68°F (17–20°C) near Fort Saint John. In autumn, cooling air quickly brings the water back down below 55°F (13°C) by late September or early October.
Swimming in the Peace River near Fort Saint John is technically possible but not commonly practiced. The river’s fast current, cold temperature, and variable depth make it unsafe for casual swimming. Instead, residents and visitors typically enjoy the riverbanks for fishing, boating, or scenic walks. During midsummer, on warm days, some people may wade in shallow, sheltered spots for short periods. However, swimming is best limited to designated lakes or smaller, calmer waterways in the area where conditions are safer and the water warms more quickly.
