Water Temperature Trends

Palau’s coastal waters are characteristically warm year‑round, making swimming a comfortable activity across the islands. Surface temperatures along the sea coast typically range from about 26 to 30 °C (79 to 86 °F), with the coolest months often in December through February and the warmest from May through October. Because Palau lies near the equator, seasonal change in sea temperature is modest compared with temperate regions, so water rarely feels chilly. Visibility for snorkeling and diving is generally excellent, especially on calm days, and the warm water supports vibrant coral reef systems and abundant marine life that attract swimmers and divers alike.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is widely allowed and popular in Palau’s lagoons, beaches and reef flats, both for casual beachgoers and for snorkelers and scuba divers. Local authorities and tour operators commonly advise where conditions are safest, since strong currents, changing tides and occasional marine hazards can occur in some channels and outer reef areas. Conservation rules also apply in certain protected zones, so visitors should respect signage and guidance to avoid restricted sites and to protect fragile habitats. During the wetter season there can be more runoff and rougher seas, so checking recent conditions before entering the water is recommended. Overall, Palau’s warm coastal seas and rich underwater scenery make it an attractive and accessible destination for swimming year‑round, with sensible precautions.
