Solomon Sea Water Temperature Today & Regional Overview
We find every place where you can swim and show you the water temperature there today and throughout the year.
Current Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Solomon Sea today ranges from 27.2°C (Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea) to 27.3°C (Alotau, Papua New Guinea).
As of today, the minimum water temperature in the Solomon Sea ranges from 79°F (26°C) to 82°F (28°C). This is very warm water, allowing for extended stays without any discomfort. Swimming in these conditions will be particularly enjoyable, making it the ideal temperature range for those who want to relax in the sea. Additionally, water in this temperature range is suitable for children and elderly people, as it is comfortable for prolonged stays.
It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

The Solomon Sea lies in the warm tropical waters north of the Coral Sea and east of Papua New Guinea, and its surface temperatures reflect its equatorial and tropical location. Sea surface temperatures typically range from about 24°C in the coolest months to around 30°C in the warmest months, with the warmest period generally occurring in the austral summer (December to February) and the coolest in the austral winter (June to August). Coastal and shallow lagoon waters can be a degree or two warmer than open-ocean measurements, while deeper waters and channels drop well below these surface values. Overall, seasonal variation is modest, so surface conditions remain comparatively warm throughout the year.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming and recreational water use are commonly possible in the Solomon Sea because surface temperatures are comfortably warm for prolonged exposure. That said, whether swimming is advisable depends on location and conditions: sheltered bays, reef-fringed beaches and shallow lagoons offer safe, warm water and good visibility for swimming and snorkeling, whereas open-ocean areas can present strong currents, significant swell and shipping traffic that make swimming hazardous. Tropical storms and cyclone activity, most likely between November and April, also increase risks and can temporarily render many beaches unsafe. Local knowledge, tide and weather information, and awareness of reef and current hazards determine where and when swimming is permitted or practical rather than temperature alone.
