Sea of Okhotsk Water Temperature Today & Regional Overview
We find every place where you can swim and show you the water temperature there today and throughout the year.
Current Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Sea of Okhotsk today ranges from 4.8°C (Magadan, Russia) to 8.9°C (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia).
As of today, the minimum water temperature in the Sea of Okhotsk ranges from 41°F (5°C) to 47°F (8°C). This water temperature is still quite low, and swimming in such conditions may only be comfortable for hardened individuals. It is recommended to limit the time spent in the water to avoid hypothermia. For those not accustomed to cold water, it is better to refrain from swimming. However, if you decide to enter the water, it is advisable to wear a warm wetsuit for protection against the cold.
It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

The Sea of Okhotsk is a cold, subarctic marginal sea whose surface water temperatures vary strongly by season and by location. In winter the surface often approaches the seawater freezing point, with widespread ice cover in the northern and western parts; typical winter values are around -1 to 2 °C in ice-prone areas and up to about 2 to 4 °C farther south. During spring and autumn the surface warms or cools through a transitional band roughly between 0 and 8 °C, depending on currents and local geography. In summer the warmest surface temperatures are found in sheltered southern bays and along the southern margin, where values can reach about 10 to 15 °C, while much of the central and northern sea remains relatively cool, generally 4 to 8 °C at best.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Sea of Okhotsk is technically possible but limited by the consistently low temperatures and the brief warm season. In summer some beaches and sheltered spots along the southern coast see visitors entering the water, often only for short periods or while using protective gear such as wetsuits; in most of the sea direct, unprotected swimming is uncomfortable and can be dangerous because cold water accelerates heat loss and increases the risk of cold shock and hypothermia. Ice presence in winter makes swimming impractical or prohibitive over large areas. Local conditions, weather and safety provisions vary, so recreational swimming is generally restricted to specific, prepared sites and seasons where temperatures are highest and safety measures are in place.
