Selenga River: general information
The Selenga is a large river flowing through the territory of Mongolia and Russia. The largest river flowing into Baikal and providing up to half of the annual inflow of water into the lake, including about 70% of the total terrigenous inflow. The water regime is characterized by low spring floods, rain floods in summer and autumn, and winter low water. The water flow of the Selenga River is formed mainly on the territory of Mongolia and averages 14.0-15.0 km³ per year at the Russian border. On the territory of the Russian Federation, an additional average of 14.0-15.0 km³ of water per year flows into the riverbed. Thus, the total average long-term runoff of the Selenga into Baikal is about 28.98 km³ per year, which is about 45-50% of the total annual runoff of the river entering Lake Baikal. The annual flow of the Angara River, flowing from Lake Baikal, at its source is about 145 km³ per year.
