Olekma River: general information
Olekma is a river in the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Amur Region and Yakutia, the right tributary of the Lena River. The river flows along the Olekminsky Upland and the Olekma-Charsky plateau in a deep and narrow valley. When the river crosses the Stanovaya and Udokan ridges, the valley resembles a canyon, in which the current velocity can reach 5.5 m / s. Downstream the channel is incised, meandering and rapids. Gradually, the river valley expands to 2–3 km, the channel - up to 300–700 m, velocities decrease to 0.5–1.2 m / s. Floodplain massifs are formed in the valley, the river bed meanders freely. In the areas of narrowing of the valley, there are forced and adapted bends.
