The East China Sea exhibits a wide range of sea surface temperatures because it spans subtropical to temperate zones and is influenced strongly by the warm Kuroshio Current. In the northern sector, near the Japanese and Korean coasts, winter temperatures commonly fall to about 5–10 °C while summer values rise to roughly 22–26 °C. Along the central Chinese coast, winter averages are typically around 10–15 °C and summer temperatures reach about 24–28 °C. In the southern reaches, near Taiwan and the transition to the South China Sea, winter temperatures are milder, around 18–22 °C, and summer often climbs to 28–30 °C or slightly higher in sheltered bays. Spring and autumn are transitional, with broad ranges: spring sea surface temperatures generally move from the winter minima toward the summer maxima, roughly 12–24 °C depending on latitude, while autumn cools from summer values back toward winter, commonly spanning about 18–26 °C across different parts of the sea.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the East China Sea is possible and widely practiced along many coastal beaches during the warm months when sea temperatures are comfortable for bathing, typically above about 22–24 °C. However, whether swimming is advisable or allowed at any given spot depends on local conditions and regulations: water quality can vary near urbanized coasts, strong currents and shipping channels pose hazards in parts of the sea, and tropical storms or jellyfish outbreaks can make swimming unsafe at times. In colder months, water is generally too cold for casual swimming without protective gear such as wetsuits. Always follow local advisories, lifeguard instructions, and posted safety information before entering the water.
