Water Temperature Trends
Sudan’s coastline lies along the Red Sea, and sea temperatures there are relatively warm year-round. Typical surface temperatures range from about 23–26 °C (73–79 °F) in the coolest months of December through February, rising to roughly 28–32 °C (82–90 °F) during the warmest period from June to September. Transitional months in spring and autumn generally show water temperatures in the mid- to high-20s °C (mid-70s to low-80s °F). The Red Sea off Sudan is known for clear water and good visibility, especially around reef areas, which contributes to a pleasant swimming and snorkeling experience for most of the year.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is possible and commonly practiced where access and facilities exist, particularly near Port Sudan and around dive sites and resort areas; the warm water makes for comfortable swimming without a wetsuit for most visitors for much of the year. However, local conditions can affect safety: currents, tidal changes, coral and rocky seabeds, occasional jellyfish, and limited lifeguard services in many places mean swimmers should take precautions. Access and infrastructure can be limited outside main towns, and permissions or local guidance may be advisable depending on the exact location. Overall, the Red Sea coast of Sudan offers favorable water temperatures for swimming and water sports across seasons, with the warmest conditions in summer and cooler but still mild conditions in winter.
