Water Temperature in Novosibirsk Oblast: General Trends and Swimming Opportunities
Original name of the region: Новосибирская область
Novosibirsk Oblast, located in southwestern Siberia, experiences a harsh continental climate with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. The region is home to several large rivers, such as the Ob River, and numerous smaller lakes that undergo significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year.
In the summer months, from June to August, the water temperature in the rivers and lakes of Novosibirsk Oblast can range from 16°C to 22°C (61°F to 72°F), which makes the waters suitable for swimming and other recreational activities. The warm temperatures during these months are especially felt in the smaller lakes and slower-moving sections of rivers, where the water tends to warm up more quickly. As the fall season approaches, the water temperature begins to decrease and by October, it can drop to around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F), making the waters too cold for comfortable swimming.
Winter temperatures in Novosibirsk Oblast are extremely cold, and rivers and lakes often freeze over by December. During the peak of winter, from January to February, the water temperature beneath the ice can plummet to around -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F). The ice remains thick enough to support ice fishing and other winter activities until late March or early April, when the temperatures rise slightly. With the arrival of spring in April and May, the ice begins to break up, and the water temperatures gradually increase, reaching around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) by late May, setting the stage for the warmer summer months ahead.
