Water Temperature Trends

Réunion, a volcanic island in the southwestern Indian Ocean, enjoys warm sea temperatures year-round, making coastal waters inviting for swimming and snorkeling. Sea surface temperatures typically range from about 23–29 °C (73–84 °F) over the year. During the austral summer (December to March) waters are warmest, generally around 26–29 °C (79–84 °F). In autumn and spring the sea is still pleasant, roughly 25–27 °C (77–81 °F). The coolest period is the austral winter (June to September), when coastal temperatures tend to fall to about 23–25 °C (73–77 °F). These modest seasonal differences mean swimmers rarely need more than a light rash guard or thin wetsuit in the coolest months.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is allowed on many of Réunion’s beaches, especially on the sheltered west coast where lagoons protected by coral reefs create calm, shallow conditions ideal for families, snorkeling and casual swimming. However, safety varies by location and season: exposed beaches and reef breaks can produce strong currents and powerful surf, and certain areas are officially restricted or carry warnings due to past shark incidents. Lifeguards are present on some popular beaches during the high season, and local signage should always be observed. Visitors are advised to choose designated swimming zones, heed posted warnings, and check local advice before entering the water. When conditions are favorable, the island’s warm, clear coastal seas offer excellent opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and diving.
