Water Temperature Trends
Oman’s coastline, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman, enjoys warm water year-round, making it inviting for swimmers most of the time. Typical sea-surface temperatures along the northern and central coast around Muscat range from about 23–26 °C (73–79 °F) in winter (December–February) to roughly 29–32 °C (84–90 °F) in the peak of summer (June–August). Spring (March–May) generally sees waters of 26–30 °C (79–86 °F), while autumn (September–November) usually remains pleasantly warm at about 27–30 °C (81–86 °F). The southern Dhofar coast near Salalah can be influenced by the khareef (monsoon) season; during that period coastal waters may be a little cooler, often around 25–28 °C (77–82 °F), and conditions can be cloudier or rougher than elsewhere.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is commonly allowed and popular along Oman’s beaches, with many sheltered bays, resort beaches and coral-fringed snorkeling spots accessible to the public. The warm temperatures make casual swimming comfortable year-round, but safety considerations vary by season and location: strong winds, rip currents and rough seas can occur, especially during monsoon-influenced months or storms, and occasional jellyfish or increased boat traffic may affect some areas. Visitors are advised to heed local beach flags and lifeguard advice, choose sheltered coves or monitored beaches for swimming, and be mindful of changing conditions if planning longer swims, snorkeling or diving.
