Water Temperature Trends

Martinique enjoys warm Caribbean waters year-round, making swimming a common activity along much of its coastline. Sea surface temperatures typically range from about 25–26 °C (77–79 °F) in the coolest months of December to February, rising to roughly 28–30 °C (82–86 °F) through the late summer and early autumn. Spring and early summer temperatures usually sit around 26–28 °C (79–82 °F). These modest seasonal shifts mean the water feels comfortable for most swimmers throughout the year, and on sunny days even the cooler winter months are readily swimmable without a wetsuit.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is generally allowed and popular, especially on the leeward, Caribbean-facing west and south coasts where sheltered bays and sandy beaches create calm conditions. The windward Atlantic side in the north and east often has stronger surf and rip currents, so swimmers should heed local advisories and avoid hazardous spots. Seasonal factors affect safety: the rainy and hurricane season from June to November can bring storms, higher seas and occasional sargassum algae accumulations that reduce water quality or access to beaches. Lifeguard coverage is not uniform across the island, so checking local flags, signs and weather reports is recommended before entering the water. Overall, Martinique’s tropical sea temperatures and varied coastline offer abundant and generally safe swimming opportunities when local conditions are observed.
