Water Temperature Trends
Cambodia’s coastline along the Gulf of Thailand is notable for consistently warm sea temperatures, making the water inviting for most of the year. Sea surface temperatures typically range from roughly 26–31 °C (79–88 °F) across the seasons. The coolest months are generally January to March when water temperatures hover around 26–28 °C (79–82 °F), while the warmest period runs from April through September with averages near 29–31 °C (84–88 °F). Local variations occur near river mouths such as the Kampot and Kep areas, where freshwater runoff after heavy rains can lower temperature and clarity temporarily. Offshore around islands like Koh Rong and the Sihanoukville archipelago, water can feel slightly cooler or clearer depending on currents and depth.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is commonly allowed and popular, especially during the dry season from November to April when seas are calmer and visibility is best. The warm water makes swimming comfortable without a wetsuit year-round, but safety considerations change with the monsoon. From May to October increased rainfall, stronger winds and choppy seas produce higher waves, stronger currents and occasional hazardous conditions that can make swimming risky at exposed beaches. Heavy rains also reduce water quality and visibility near river estuaries. Visitors should heed local warnings, lifeguard advice where available, and avoid swimming in rough weather or where boat traffic and marine hazards such as jellyfish are reported.
